Soundstop vs. LVT + underlayment

One product with the soundmat built in, or two products installed separately. Here is what changes on the job, and what the certified lab result shows.

Certified Lab Result

Soundstop, tested with no separate soundmat.

Soundstop 3mm glue-down, R5773.02, open-web wood trussNone615668

Assembly tested: 18″ open-web wood truss with 3/4″ gypsum-concrete topping, insulation, resilient channel and a gypsum-board ceiling. Ratings belong to this tested assembly, not to the flooring alone. Lab values per ASTM E90 / E492 / E1007; field results typically run a few points lower. Confirm your jurisdiction's requirement and cite the current report in your submittal. More results by assembly: acoustical test data.

What changes on the job.

Soundstop

The soundmat arrives bonded to every plank: one product to buy, stage and install. Available as glue-down LVT (3–5mm) or SPC click (5–6.5mm).

LVT + separate underlayment

Two products and two install steps. Lets you pick the underlayment separately, and thicker mats can raise impact ratings on some assemblies; see the full matrix on the test data page.

When Soundstop is not the right fit

  • Ground floors and slab-on-grade with no occupancy below. There is nothing to isolate, so a visually matching glue-down LVT without the acoustic core costs less.
  • Your spec names a specific underlayment or assembly that Soundstop has not been tested in. Ask for the reports first.
  • The required rating is above what any tested assembly here has reached. Don't assume; confirm with a report.
